How to Make Classic Sourdough Boule

Did you ever past a bakery and get swept away by the intoxicating aroma of fresh bread? That's the power of the perfect loaf. But sourdough takes it to another level, offering a unique depth of flavor and a delightful tang, all thanks to its unique leavening process.

Don't be intimidated – while it does require a little patience and a sprinkle of science, creating this masterpiece at home is surprisingly simple!

And the reward? A loaf unlike any other, bursting with flavor and guaranteed to impress your friends and family (or maybe just yourself, no judgment here!).

Classic Sourdough Boule Recipe

Prep time: 20 min

Cook time: 50 min

Fermentation time: 8-12 hrs

Serving: 12 slices

What You'll Need:

  • 1 cup active sourdough starter
  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 ½ tsp salt

Directions:

  1. Add warm water and active sourdough starter into the mixing bowl and mix well.
  2. Add flour, one cup at a time, stir continuously until sticky dough forms.
  3. Sprinkle the salt over the dough and knead it in until well incorporated.
  4. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let the dough rise at room temperature for 8-12 hours, or overnight.
  5. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.
  6. Place a Dutch oven with the lid on in the oven to preheat as well.
  7. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and shape it into a round boule.
  8. Carefully transfer the boule to the preheated Dutch oven, cover with the lid, and bake for 30 minutes.
  9. Remove the lid and continue baking for an additional 15-20 minutes.
  10. Allow the sourdough boule to cool on a wire rack before slicing.
  11. Serve!

Tips:

  • For a more developed sourdough flavor, use a starter that has been fed and refreshed regularly. Make sure it's bubbly and ready to use!
  • If you don't have a Dutch oven, you can bake the bread on a baking sheet with a steam pan filled with water placed on the bottom rack of the oven.
  • Be patient with the rising process. The longer the dough rises, the deeper the flavor will be.

Now grab your flour, embrace the journey, and get ready to bake a loaf that's both delicious and deeply satisfying. Enjoy every bite!
