Make Your Own Orange Marmalade
Marmalade is a fruit preserve, typically made from citrus fruits like oranges, but also lemons, limes, grapefruits, and even combinations.
Interestingly, the word "marmalade" originally referred to quince paste, not citrus! It wasn't until the 18th century that oranges became the main ingredient in marmalade.
While most commonly enjoyed on toast or scones at breakfast, marmalade can also be used in various ways, like:
Baking (cakes, muffins, glazes)
Sauces (sweet and savory)
Glazes for meats and poultry
Dressings and marinades
Cocktails

10-12 oranges
2 lemons
1 Β½ quarts water
8 cups sugar
Equipment:
Large pot
Sharp knife
Cutting board
Measuring cups and spoons
Canning jars

Peel and thinly slice the lemon.
Combine oranges, lemon, orange peel, and water in a pot and simmer for 5 minutes.
Cover and let stand in a cool place for 12β18 hours.
Start by preparing jars and getting water in the canner heating. When the jars are ready to be processed, you want the canner hot but not boiling.
Boil the orange mixture until tender.
Pour the marmalade into the sterilized and hot jar. Remove any air bubbles. Place the jar into the water bath canner. Process for 10-15 minutes.
Tips and Tricks:
Use thick-skinned oranges with vibrant color for the best flavor and zest.
If you prefer a smoother marmalade, puree some of the cooked fruit before adding the sugar.
Don't throw away the orange peels! Use them to make candied orange peel, infuse your favorite tea, or add them to potpourri for a citrusy aroma.
Get creative with your flavor combinations! Experiment with different spices, herbs, or even adding other citrus fruits like blood oranges or grapefruit.
Remember, the most important ingredient is your own love and creativity!
Happy marmalading!
