Cook time: 25 min

Rising time: 12-18 hrs

Serving: 8

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup active sourdough starter

  • 1 ½ cups lukewarm water

  • 4 cups bread flour

  • 1 ½ tsp salt

Instructions:

  • Add sourdough starter and lukewarm water into the mixing bowl and stir well.

  • Add the bread flour and salt to the bowl. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.

  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes.

  • Preheat your oven to 450°F.

  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and divide it into two equal portions. Shape each portion into a baguette.

  • Place the shaped baguettes on a parchment-lined baking sheet or a floured baguette pan.

Serving Suggestions:

These crusty sourdough baguettes are perfect for a variety of meals. Serve them warm with a slather of butter or olive oil for a simple appetizer. They are excellent for making gourmet sandwiches, such as a classic ham and cheese or a fresh Caprese. Pair them with soups and stews for a hearty meal, or use them as a base for bruschetta topped with fresh tomatoes and basil. You can also slice them into thin pieces and serve with a cheese platter for a delightful entertaining option.

Helpful Tips:

  • For the best results, make sure your sourdough starter is active and bubbly before beginning the recipe. The longer fermentation time (12-18 hours) allows for a deeper flavor profile and a lighter texture.

  • If your kitchen is cool, consider placing the dough in a slightly warm area to encourage fermentation.

  • When kneading the dough, be sure to use enough flour to prevent sticking, but avoid adding too much as it can make the baguettes dense.

  • To create a crispy crust, place a shallow pan of water in the oven while baking; the steam will help achieve that desired crusty texture.

  • Allow the baguettes to cool completely on a wire rack before slicing to maintain their structure.
