Octopus Amigurumi

This pattern will guide you through creating an adorable crocheted octopus amigurumi, perfect for cuddling or gifting. It includes easy-to-follow instructions for the body, eight wiggly tentacles, and assembly.

Let's get started and yarn up your very own cuddly octopus friend!

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn (pick your favorite colors!)

  • 3.5mm crochet hook (size E-4)

  • Safety eyes (or yarn/thread to embroider eyes)

  • Fiberfill stuffing

  • Yarn needle

  • Stitch marker (optional)

Abbreviations:

  • ch - chain

  • sc - single crochet

  • inc - increase (make 2 single crochets in the same stitch)

  • dec - decrease (single crochet two stitches together)

  • sl st - slip stitch

Instructions:

The Octopus Body:

  1. Magic ring: Start with a magic ring and crochet 6 single crochets into the ring (you'll have 6 stitches).

  2. Increase rounds: In each stitch around, crochet a single crochet and increase once (you'll have 12 stitches).

  3. Shaping the head: Continue increasing rounds, following this pattern:

    • Round 3: sc in first stitch, inc in next stitch (repeat around for 18 stitches)

    • Round 4: sc in first 2 stitches, inc in next stitch (repeat around for 24 stitches)

    • Round 5: sc in first 3 stitches, inc in next stitch (repeat around for 30 stitches)

    • Round 6: sc in first 4 stitches, inc in next stitch (repeat around for 36 stitches)

  4. Body rounds: Rounds 7-11: Crochet a single crochet in each stitch around (maintain 36 stitches).

  5. Shaping the body: Now you'll decrease to create the body shape. Follow this pattern:

    • Round 12: sc in first 4 stitches, dec in next stitch (repeat around for 30 stitches)

    • Round 13: sc in first 3 stitches, dec in next stitch (repeat around for 24 stitches)

    • Round 14: sc in first 2 stitches, dec in next stitch (repeat around for 18 stitches)

  6. Eyes and stuffing: Between rounds 8 and 9, add your safety eyes, spacing them 4 stitches apart. Stuff the head area with fiberfill.

  7. Finishing the head: Round 15: sc in first stitch, dec in next stitch (repeat around for 12 stitches).

  8. Closing the head: Round 16: Decrease in each stitch around (you'll have 6 stitches left). Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Weave the tail through the remaining stitches, pull to close the opening securely, and weave in the end.

The Octopus Legs (Make 8):

  1. Chain 16 stitches.

  2. Starting from the second chain from the hook, single crochet in each chain across (you'll have 15 stitches).

  3. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for attaching to the body. Repeat this process to make a total of 8 legs.

Putting It All Together:

  1. Sew the legs evenly around the bottom edge of the body, using the long tails you left.

  2. Weave in any remaining ends.

Now you have a cute crochet octopus! Feel free to experiment with colors and sizes to create your own variations. Enjoy your amigurumi project!
